Buryat-Mongolian legends and fairytales series

  • Burbot

Burbot is one of the totem animal of buryats, it lives in deep waters of the Baikal lake - the deepest and oldest lake of the world.

  • Mansan Gurme

My interpretation of Grandmother Manzan Gurme from Buryat mythology. According to one version, she is the daughter of the Great Mother Goddess - Ehe Burkhan or Ulgen Eje. Her grandson is Geser himself, the hero of mongolian epic, she created the Milky Way, is the mother of nine good tengris and helped Geser in the fight against evil forces and, of course, has all the qualities of the classic archetype of a wise old woman. "Wise old woman": kind, compassionate, as well as mysterious, magical and prophetic. We see her in folk tales as a protective old woman who comes to the aid of the hero and as the one who tests the virtues of this very hero.

Ekhor is traditional ritual dance of buryats, “represents the rotation of the earth, repeating the movement of the sun across the sky, allows you to create a model of the national universe, from it and the whole society.”

  • Hun Shubun

«According to the ancient religious and mythological views of the Buryats, the white swan Hun shubun brings happiness, wealth, and prosperity to its earthly descendants on its wings.

Therefore, the ritual system of the Buryats had a whole complex of rituals and prohibitions associated with the cult of divine birds. In the image of the swan Hun shubuun, there is an obvious sacred connection with solar cults and the cult of fertility in the context of ancient religious beliefs of the Turkic and Mongolian people.» Dashieva L.

  • Geser epic hero

Geser is the super hero from epic literature of Mongolia and Central Asia. There are different versions of this epic: tibetan, ladakhi, buthanese and mongolian.

Buryat versions of the epic focus mainly on Geser's battles with various demons. The stories contain a detailed and drastically different prologue to Geser's exploits. According to these versions, the great Tengri Khormusta khan of the celestial tribes of the West waged war with Atai Ulan khan of the malicious gods of the east. After his victory, Khormusta dismembers Atai Ulan to prevent his resurrection and throws his body parts to Earth, where they become demons and monsters. The act almost causes the extinction of humanity, the middle son of Khormusta was sent from the realm of heaven to fight the eval forces.

  • Lark

Lark from Mongolian epic Geser. The song of this magical steppe bird has the power of healing.

  • Bukha-Noyon

  • Balzhin Khatun
